Written Scheme of Examination
WSE – Written Scheme of Examination is a document which is required by statutory regulations and which describes the examination(s) to be performed on the equipment covered by the regulations.
The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR) require that users and owners of pressure systems (as defined in the regulations) must ensure that a WSE is in place before the system is operated and that the system is examined in accordance with that WSE. The WSE must be prepared or certified as suitable by a competent person.
The WSE specifies those parts of the system to be examined, the damage mechanism that may be expected, the nature of the examination required, including the NDT that needs to be applied, and the preparatory work needed for the item to be examined safely. It also specifies the maximum interval between examinations.
A WSE can also be used to specify examination intervals as an alternative to the fixed examination intervals in the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER). Again, any NDT required on lifting equipment and accessories will be specified in the WSE.
