Industry 4.0
I4.0 – Industry 4.0 is the name given to what is considered to be the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the previous three being:
(1) the introduction of steam- and water-powered machines; (2) the introduction of the telegraph, railways and electricity; and (3) the digital revolution. I4.0 was coined in 2011 by a project started by the German government to look at the country’s high-tech strategy. I4.0 takes the digital revolution to the next level and comprises four main technology components: cyber-physical systems; the Internet of Things (IoT, see ‘What the Hec?!’, January 2019); cloud computing; and cognitive computing. The premise is the collection and analysis of data to assist in optimising and speeding up decision-making.
NDE 4.0 is the contribution that NDE makes to I4.0.
