Small Modular Reactor

SMRSmall Modular Reactor is the name given to a new approach to commercial reactors for generating electricity. SMRs are 300 MWe or less in output. They are designed to be built in modules in a factory, before being transported to the generating site. SMRs provide flexibility in that they can be used to power small, remote grids or a number of modules could be combined to produce a larger output station. The SMRs require smaller initial investment than larger plants and can provide an economy of scale if a large number are produced.

The UK government has given initial support to the development of SMRs. The first reactors are likely to be compact pressurised water reactors with alternative technologies being used for future designs.
