FMC

Full Matrix Capture

FMCFull Matrix Capture is a technique for capturing all possible ultrasonic data from a phased array probe. Each element is fired in turn and the received signal is recorded at each of the other elements for each firing. The Figure shows element 1 firing and data collected on elements 2 to n, where n is the total number of elements in the array.

So FMC collects the complete dataset of time-domain signals from every transmitter-receiver pair combination of elements in the array. This means that all the information exists to undertake subsequent processing of the data to generate an image.

Further information on FMC describes the processing that is done on the FMC data set which in turn is likely to be given an acronym of its own. So see next month's What the Hec?! if you are interested in further information.

What the hec?! articles are not intended to be the definitive account on the topic or acronym in question. Readers’ comments and contributions are welcomed. Email: ndtnews@bindt.org
