Model Assisted Probability of Detection 

MAPOD – Model Assisted Probability of Detection is the process of calculating the probability of detection (POD), see ‘What the Hec?!’, June 2006, for an inspection through the use of validated theoretical models. The POD for an inspection is traditionally calculated from experimental data, obtained from test-pieces containing representations of defects. However, test-pieces are expensive to manufacture and it is difficult to establish a statistically valid experimental dataset. MAPOD offers the ability to reduce the number, and hence cost, of test-pieces. Once set up, MAPOD theoretical models can be used to generate large datasets. They can also be used to investigate the sensitivity of the inspection performance to variations in different parameters.
